DWG activity report for Q3, 2022
Statistics
579 tickets were created in OTRS in this quarter (160 of these were copied from the web site issue tracker). Issues of minor importance are sometimes handled directly in the web site issue tracker and will therefore not be counted.
A total of 784 messages were received in the context of these tickets, and 1008 messages and memos were written by DWG members.
140 tickets were follow-on tickets to older issues, 64 were discarded as spam. 296 tickets created in this quarter were closed, and additionally, 99 tickets from previous periods were closed.
The median time for the first (non-automated) response to tickets was 6 hours.
13 DWG members were active in the quarter (87% of cases were handled by the five busiest members).
The majority of tickets were handled in English (330), but we also used the languages German (17), Dutch (13), Russian (11), French (8), and Spanish (7). (We will also often include auto-translated versions of English messages in responses.)
Generally, all these numbers should be taken with a grain of salt because edge cases can be mis-counted in our statistics. Also, due to reorganisation or cleaning out of old information, it is possible that previous quarters shown in the above graph differ slightly from the numbers published at the time.
Comment and Notable Issues
Unauthorised test edits by an account
This quarter we had another example of test edits by an account that weren't made by the original creator of that account. As with the last time this happened, it seems likely to have been a password stuffing attack (perhaps the user used the same password on a website elsewhere that had been involved in a data breach?). They were helped to reset their password and their subsequent edits looked far more sensible, and in keeping with the sort of edits that that account had made before the test edits started. As ever, we can only suggest that everyone practice good password hygiene such as using unique passwords for each site and perhaps checking any emails and account names somewhere like here.
Problematic edits in the Philippines
We've had a few examples of this, by different accounts that used a similar modus operandi. In this example we were able to make contact, but no meaningful communication occurred. As with previous examples, the edits couldn't be "stood up" by other means and were reverted.
Language conflict in Kirkuk
Language use, and particularly what should be in OSM's "name" tag, can be a source of conflict. As well as the actual on-the-ground conflict that Kirkuk has seen in recent years, there have been disputes within OSM about the use of Kurdish and Arabic within names. This is still somewhat an ongoing issue, and neither "side" is without fault.

Test edits using a fake version of iD
A series of user accounts were created to add obviously test data to OSM using something that claimed to be a version of iD but may not have been. We advised them to only map things that existed in the real world, but that advice was ignored. Most edits were reverted by the OSM community; we reverted the rest.
Animal rights issue
We received a large number of reports in a short period of time about the same problem: a web site in Turkey created with the aim of tracking, and potentially killing, stray dogs. This site was using OpenStreetMap tiles, and animal rights activists orchestrated a campaign during which dozens of individuals filed complaints with the DWG. While this might have been a well-meaning animal rights cause, one single complaint would have been enough - orchestrated campaigns like this make our work harder and will ultimately lead us to giving less attention to a complaint, not more. In this particular case, the OSMF board dealt with the issue and blocked the site from using the openstreetmap.org tiles. The site has since switched to using map tiles from a non-OSMF source instead.
